Narrow win for the Under 13s

Sunday 8th July 2018
West Surrey Youth Cricket League
Stoke D’Abernon U13 135 for 5 (20 overs)
Teddington U13 131 for 2 (20 overs)
Stoke D’Abernon U13 won by 4 runs

Match report from Kevin…

Both teams could only muster 10 players each for this fixture, Stoke had two U13s, the rest U12s, Teddington similarly bolstered from their U12s.

Teddington won the toss & put Stoke into bat; our two U13s Alex M & Ella C opening and both playing good shots from the off. Alex looked in very good nick until a caught & bowled despatched him.

Ella then partnered with Aarav M and both kept the scoreboard ticking. Ella got to retirement first, her 31 runs included no fewer than seven fours. Aarav’s retiring later on 32 with six fours and one six both had taken full advantage of a rock hard outfield.

Sam P was unlucky to be bowled by an absolute jaffa having just got off the mark, Jack T worked hard for 14 runs, his quick running between the wickets in the heat most impressive, James M 16 runs and Max B 5 runs saw out the final few overs.

Stoke would have similarly put Teddington in to bat first to avoid fielding second as the day got hotter. The team however worked hard delivering one of our best displays this season.

Teddington didn’t quite show the same batting threat as Stoke but found enough boundaries to keep the scoreboard going. Jake P and Sam P were outstanding in the deep, alternating various fielding positions and saving anything which evaded Alex behind the stumps.

Aarav G’s off spin has been hugely effective this season and he was unlucky not to get more from another skilful display. Wickets were proving difficult until Ella clean bowled two in a row, beating batters with ferocious pace. The hat-trick delivery was not too far away but the batter survived.

Another tricky umpire call similar to last week gave the benefit of the doubt to one batter, Alex gloving one from James’ bowling but unclear if bat had made contact, at least to the umpire if not the Stoke players.

All this pressure ended up with a close run chase. With three overs to go Teddington needed 16 runs, two overs to go they needed 10 but a miserly over from Aarav G gave away just two singles. With 8 needed to win off the final over and Stoke guarding the boundary Jack bowled with terrific line & length to limit the visitors to just three singles much to the delight of the home crowd.

Praise for the Under 10s, Under 13s and Under 15s

Congratulations to the Under 13s and the Under 15s on podium finishes in the Mid-Surrey Colts League’s Spirit of Cricket markings for 2016, announced at the League AGM recently attended by Kevin.

The tables were as follows:

The Under 10s made it through to the final of their competition, losing narrowly to Wimbledon, prompting this favourable League Report from the Competition Secretary, (independent of Stoke):

This was the inaugural year for the U10 age group. The league format was 20 over pairs  with a maximum of 3 overs per bowler and minus 5 runs for a wicket. The cup format was  traditional cricket with max 3 overs and batsmen retiring at 25. Read more

Under 13s beat Merrow in Cup Quarter-Final

More good news from the Colts section from Trevor:

Thursday 30th June 2016
West Surrey Youth Cricket League Knockout Cup Quarter-Final
Stoke D’Abernon U13 95
Merrow U13 87
Stoke D’Abernon U13 won by 8 runs

We had a great 8 run win against Merrow CC this evening – finally playing a fixture which was rescheduled 3 times.

10-man Stoke made 95, with Alex C returning from retirement to notch up 47 not out. Our bowling and fielding made up for any shortage of runs, with Tom L taking 2 for 5 off 4, and Alex C taking 2 for 17 off 4 despite having taken what looked like a serious knock on the elbow during his innings.

Jeremy D needs a mention for bowling 2 crucial late overs which saw him take a wicket and earn a run out, (1 for 5), just when things were in the balance, and Will R for his important 19 runs just when our batting was slowing down.

Well done to the boys for making the semi-final and a special thanks to all the parents for sticking by the Club through a week of ghastly weather.

Sometimes these seasons are a massive breath-holding contest, with the clubs which keep fielding full teams finally winning through.

Today was one of those! No doubt the semi-finals will be the same. Thanks too to Johnny Lawes for his help with umpiring.

For those in the Byfleet area this evening or at a loose end and fancy a cricket fix, there is a Gladys Chitty match being played. Address : Byfleet Cricket Club, Parvis Road, Byfleet, KT14 7AB. The players will be there as close to 5.30pm as possible to warm up.

Under 13s Bounce back from Cup Defeat

Trevor Davis reviews the first week of the Under 13s season:

We completed our first weekend of the season on a high note, having lost in the Surrey Cup to a well-drilled Pyrford team on Friday night. Patrick O’Neill was definitely the pick of the players in that first game, retiring on 32 and taking 2 wickets for 13 in 4 overs. William Loughlin also weighed in well on debut, scoring 28 runs and taking 1 wicket for 36 off his 4 overs. Nevertheless, our 39 extras, (pity we couldn’t retire them on 30 too!), came back to haunt us, and we final lost by 48 runs. Read more

Under 13s dent Wimbledon’s Title Hopes and another win for the Under 12s

More good news from the colts section:

Mid-Surrey Colts League U13 League
Stoke 134 for 6 (24 overs)
Wimbledon 97 all out (21 overs)
Stoke D’Abernon U13 won by 37 runs

Match report from Paul Hanratty. (Thanks to Paul from Caroline Neat for managing this match.)

Stoke won the toss and elected to bat on a very difficult wicket with a big outfield that was very slow.

Marcus and Ollie B opened the batting and had an excellent opening stand – careful batting and great running between the wickets meant we got off at 4– 5 per over despite excellent bowling.

When Ollie was out with the score on 29 Alfie joined Marcus and batted very sensibly under strict instructions not to ‘Alfinate’ the bowling, these two taking the score to 64 before Alfie was bowled by a fantastic delivery.

Tevez and Ryan kept the run rate up with Marcus who retired on 40 not out, but the fireworks started when Will M came in at number 6, ran hard between the wickets with Tom L and smashed a 6 over backward square leg.

Eventually Stoke made 134 off 24 overs for 6 wickets, against the best bowling attack I have seen this year. There was relentless speed and a tricky spinner to negotiate, but the boys showed guts and proved they can run hard and get the run rate up.

We went out with a plan to set aggressive fields and bowl straight on a very tricky wicket with wicked bounce. Ollie M agreed to keep wicket on a very trying pitch and took an unbelievable catch in the first over off Ollie B to start the Wimbledon slide.

Continued pressure from Ollie B, (2 wickets), Tevez, (2 wickets), and Ryan, (4 wickets – denied a ‘fifer’ by a dropped catch that turned into a run out), meant Wimbledon were always under pressure and were 50 for 9 at one point, before the tailenders repaired the damage against our spinners. We held our nerve and the boys fielded very well and urged each other on. Excellent captaining from Marcus meant we got home comfortably with Wimbledon 97 all out.

The boys can be proud that against a good team and a truly exceptional bowling attack they posted a big score without hitting a single rash shot, then backing it up with aggressive, quick bowling and good fielding themselves.

The boys say the Coke and Kit Kats helped them perform!

Under 12s out of the Cup / Missing Under 13 match report found

Friday 23rd May 2014
Mid-Surrey Colts U12 League Cup
Stoke D’Abernon U12 117 for 9 (20 overs)
Walton-on-Thames U12 120 for 4 (19.4 overs)
Walton-on-Thames U12 won by 6 wickets

Johnny Lawes has sent in the following match report:

Rory and Harry opened the batting on a very wet wicket. Rory looked on good form scoring 10 quickly but the loss of a few early wickets had us 25 for 4 at one point. Tom retired on 35 and then some quick runs at the end from Jamie, (9), Ben, (14), and Ollie, (8), gave us a very defendable total of 117. Another good effort keeping the scoring rate close to the requested 6 an over.

We used seven bowlers in response and unfortunately bowled 16 wides gifting the opposition with 32 runs. Two wickets each from Ben and Tom but Walton’s top three batsmen scored 13, 17 and 31 respectively taking the game away from us.

Walton still needed 6 off the last over which they managed with 2 balls to spare. A very close game which 9 times out of 10 we would probably have won but played in a good spirit.

It was a useful learning experience for the boys to defend a total and field and bowl under pressure which will stand them in good stead for the next match.
