Narrow win for the Under 13s

Sunday 8th July 2018
West Surrey Youth Cricket League
Stoke D’Abernon U13 135 for 5 (20 overs)
Teddington U13 131 for 2 (20 overs)
Stoke D’Abernon U13 won by 4 runs

Match report from Kevin…

Both teams could only muster 10 players each for this fixture, Stoke had two U13s, the rest U12s, Teddington similarly bolstered from their U12s.

Teddington won the toss & put Stoke into bat; our two U13s Alex M & Ella C opening and both playing good shots from the off. Alex looked in very good nick until a caught & bowled despatched him.

Ella then partnered with Aarav M and both kept the scoreboard ticking. Ella got to retirement first, her 31 runs included no fewer than seven fours. Aarav’s retiring later on 32 with six fours and one six both had taken full advantage of a rock hard outfield.

Sam P was unlucky to be bowled by an absolute jaffa having just got off the mark, Jack T worked hard for 14 runs, his quick running between the wickets in the heat most impressive, James M 16 runs and Max B 5 runs saw out the final few overs.

Stoke would have similarly put Teddington in to bat first to avoid fielding second as the day got hotter. The team however worked hard delivering one of our best displays this season.

Teddington didn’t quite show the same batting threat as Stoke but found enough boundaries to keep the scoreboard going. Jake P and Sam P were outstanding in the deep, alternating various fielding positions and saving anything which evaded Alex behind the stumps.

Aarav G’s off spin has been hugely effective this season and he was unlucky not to get more from another skilful display. Wickets were proving difficult until Ella clean bowled two in a row, beating batters with ferocious pace. The hat-trick delivery was not too far away but the batter survived.

Another tricky umpire call similar to last week gave the benefit of the doubt to one batter, Alex gloving one from James’ bowling but unclear if bat had made contact, at least to the umpire if not the Stoke players.

All this pressure ended up with a close run chase. With three overs to go Teddington needed 16 runs, two overs to go they needed 10 but a miserly over from Aarav G gave away just two singles. With 8 needed to win off the final over and Stoke guarding the boundary Jack bowled with terrific line & length to limit the visitors to just three singles much to the delight of the home crowd.

Praise for the Under 10s, Under 13s and Under 15s

Congratulations to the Under 13s and the Under 15s on podium finishes in the Mid-Surrey Colts League’s Spirit of Cricket markings for 2016, announced at the League AGM recently attended by Kevin.

The Under 10s made it through to the final of their competition, losing narrowly to Wimbledon, prompting this favourable League Report from the Competition Secretary, (independent of Stoke):

This was the inaugural year for the U10 age group. The league format was 20 over pairs  with a maximum of 3 overs per bowler and minus 5 runs for a wicket. The cup format was  traditional cricket with max 3 overs and batsmen retiring at 25. Read more

Under 13s beat Merrow in Cup Quarter-Final

More good news from the Colts section from Trevor:

Thursday 30th June 2016
West Surrey Youth Cricket League Knockout Cup Quarter-Final
Stoke D’Abernon U13 95
Merrow U13 87
Stoke D’Abernon U13 won by 8 runs

We had a great 8 run win against Merrow CC this evening – finally playing a fixture which was rescheduled 3 times.

10-man Stoke made 95, with Alex C returning from retirement to notch up 47 not out. Our bowling and fielding made up for any shortage of runs, with Tom L taking 2 for 5 off 4, and Alex C taking 2 for 17 off 4 despite having taken what looked like a serious knock on the elbow during his innings.

Jeremy D needs a mention for bowling 2 crucial late overs which saw him take a wicket and earn a run out, (1 for 5), just when things were in the balance, and Will R for his important 19 runs just when our batting was slowing down.

Well done to the boys for making the semi-final and a special thanks to all the parents for sticking by the Club through a week of ghastly weather.

Sometimes these seasons are a massive breath-holding contest, with the clubs which keep fielding full teams finally winning through.

Today was one of those! No doubt the semi-finals will be the same. Thanks too to Johnny Lawes for his help with umpiring.

For those in the Byfleet area this evening or at a loose end and fancy a cricket fix, there is a Gladys Chitty match being played. Address : Byfleet Cricket Club, Parvis Road, Byfleet, KT14 7AB. The players will be there as close to 5.30pm as possible to warm up.
