Both sides had availability problems but played out an exciting nine-a-side encounter, each having the same tenth fielder as Leatherhead’s Josh Berryman – who has played for Stoke in this fixture before when we have been short – fielded for both sides.

Nothing but praise should be handed out to this team who were again savaged by calls from higher XIs and general unavailability.

The result and scorecard may look like this was comfortable, which it was in the end, but Stoke had to withstand some spirited lower order batting to secure a win.

We were delighted to receive an invite from Frimley to continue our season, and they extended their hospitality so much that they offered to field first, their plan to give as many players a bowl as it was their last home match of the season.

Minus their manager at pitch-side Stoke’s Over 40s fell to a home defeat after posting a workable total; a below par start in the bowling and fielding effort giving the opposition the flyer they needed.

Kevin’s network expanded further, resulting in a new fixture for the Over 40s, and definitely one to be repeated. Despite being minutes down the road this was the first time a Stoke senior side had visited West End Esher since 2006, (and before that 1993 in our last season in the Wey Valley League.)
After the last round of League matches the players made it back to base from various parts of the county to celebrate the end of the League campaign that saw the 1st XI remain in Division 1 after their first ever season at that level; the 2nd XI and newly formed 3rd XI both secured promotion. To complete the senior representation there was also a full programme of Sunday XI and Over 40s fixtures…in short a record number of senior competitive games played this year.

After last week’s Sunday XI match was ended early by the rain the biblical that hit the Stoke Rec on Saturday evening put this one under threat as well, but a combination of Saturday’s mop up, George’s good work and a clear morning meant the ground was fit for play.
