3s v Epsom Methodists June 2018

3rd XI Victorious. McMillan 70, Hafeez 57. 2s Lose.

Saturday 23rd June 2018
Friendly
Stoke D’Abernon 3rd XI 197 for 8 (40 overs)
Epsom Methodists 175 for 8 (40 overs)
Stoke D’Abernon 3rd XI won by 22 runs

Good availability at the beginning of the week allowed us to accept the offer of an invitation to play the Epsom Methodists. EMCC are one of our traditional ‘Sunday XI’ opponents but a crammed fixture programme at the Rec meant this was one we had to miss this year…so it was great when they were able to host a Saturday game and enough of our ‘I’ll play either day’ candidates were able to attend.

What is it about T20 matches at Stoke this year? With the boffins at CricInfo looking into our seemingly unique Surrey Championship T20 win against Horsley & Send in May, (http://www.stokecc.co.uk/2018/05/25/t20-win-over-horsley-send-on-cricinfos-radar/), they’ll be at it again to see if a side has ever won a match with three sixes off the last three balls…and before you ask, remember that Ben Stokes wasn’t hit for all those sixes off the last four balls of that World T20 Final…and he had 19 runs to play with. Stoke needed 24 off the last over of this one.

Sunday XI win at Cheam

Sunday 10th June 2018
Friendly
Stoke D’Abernon 226 for 7 (40 overs)
Cheam 154 all out (35.5 overs)
Stoke D’Abernon won by 72 runs

Stoke’s Sunday XI recorded an impressive win at Cheam who were, as ever, welcoming hosts. There was the added bonus of the game being moved to Cheam’s main pitch after their scheduled Development Trust League game against Guildford was scratched by their opposition. Oddly one of their Development XI couldn’t be cajoled into this fixture so we faced a short-handed opposition for the second week running.

Stoke made very short work of a Richmond Nomads side who made a curious decision to choose to bat despite midweek discussions about relative strengths and the result of last year’s emergency fixture.

A new look Sunday XI including a number of exciting prospects from our Academy scored a good win in a match that wasn’t arranged until Saturday morning, then was under threat due to the previous day’s rains. The ground pulled up OK, Hoppy & Shawn reporting early to work on a wet patch to ensure the start was only slightly delayed.
