Sunday 30th September 2018
Friendly
Stoke D’Abernon 251 for 6 (35 overs)
The Min 196 all out (31.4 overs)

More late season fun and a triumph for patience. As the weeks go by and more players call time on their seasons, some having previously said available, there was still a Stoke side ready for a game if an opposition could be found.

Oxshott v Stoke September 2018

Late season fun at Oxshott

Sunday 16th September 2018
Friendly
Stoke D’Abernon 220 for 5 (40 overs)
Maori Oxshott 222 for 5 (38.4 overs)
Maori Oxshott won by 4 wickets

With the clubs in different divisions in League cricket and the pre-season friendly wiped out by rain it took until mid-September to play a game against our friends and neighbours this year. It was worth the wait, though, as the sides played out an enjoyable match. Stoke took this one deep but the home side timed their run chase well with former Stoker George Depree pulling a six to win to and end his reign as Maori Oxshott’s Sunday skipper.

Friendly v Old Ruts September 2018

Saturday Friendly Victory at Old Ruts

Saturday 8th September 2018
Friendly
Stoke D’Abernon 198 for 7 dec (42 overs)
Old Rutlishians 116 all out (34.1 overs)
Stoke D’Abernon won by 82 runs

Pessimism that we would be able to play a Saturday fixture as everyone seemed to be available on Sunday this week, (two Sunday friendlies for the first time in years), took a nice twist mid-week when one of our regular friendly oppositions was in the same boat as us and were looking to see if we had a fixture or spare players if we didn’t. Solution? See if resources could be pooled and source a fixture.

Stoke suffered a narrow defeat in their opening Trust League match of the year in a game they were well placed to win at drinks during the chase, then seemingly out of it five overs later, but then almost pulling off the improbable with Club competition record 9th and 10th wicket partnerships.

A new look Sunday XI including a number of exciting prospects from our Academy scored a good win in a match that wasn’t arranged until Saturday morning, then was under threat due to the previous day’s rains. The ground pulled up OK, Hoppy & Shawn reporting early to work on a wet patch to ensure the start was only slightly delayed.

Bowled Out by a Stoker

This week’s “Ask Steven” feature on CricInfo saw one follower ask:

Which bowler has the best record of hitting the stumps, given a large amount of wickets?

The answer was:

Of the 181 bowlers who have so far taken 100 or more Test wickets, the two with the highest percentage of bowled dismissals are the 19th-century England pair of George Lohmann, with 51 out of 112, or 45.53% bowled, and Johnny Briggs, with 52 out of 118, (44.06%)
