Ferreira v Godalming 2018

Carel left stranded as Academy learn the hard way

Sunday 22nd July 2018
Surrey Trust League
Godalming 288 for 7 (40 overs)
Stoke D’Abernon 188 all out (29.5 overs)
Godalming won by 100 runs

Whilst the scorecard doesn’t lie a lot of good things could still be taken out of this one and if some of the errors can be ironed out between now and the return fixture on the 5th August hopefully we will see a reversal of this result and progress up the table.

Kelso and Dennis

Sunday Nine beat the Chelsea Nomads

Sunday 15th July 2018
Friendly
Chelsea Nomads 191 for 9 (40 overs)
Stoke D’Abernon 192 for 3 (33.4 overs)
Stoke D’Abernon won by 7 wickets

With World Cup fever apparently over on Wednesday night, this long-standing fixture was confirmed the following evening with the opposition saying “we have ten – should be able to get an 11th” and Stoke having 14 to pick from. A few of the 14 switched to Saturday to make the 3rd XI match happen, leaving us with 10+TBC – even if TBC wasn’t around, still a good ten. Sadly TBC wasn’t available, no worries there…but then two pulled out with bad backs – one first thing, another an hour before the start – resulting in an SOS. Roddy Kelso answered the call, so having lost a toss committing us to a fielding stint and no chance to sign up any others we made do with nine…and what a performance on another hot day.

Will Thomson v Horsley Trust

Last Over ‘Win’ for the ‘Academy’

Sunday 17th June 2018
Surrey Trust League
Stoke D’Abernon 241 for 8 (40 overs)
Horsley & Send 236 all out (39.2 overs)
Stoke D’Abernon won by 5 runs

Planning for Sunday took a strange direction this week as having previously e-mailed to say they would not be able to play a Trust League fixture on this date, (copy e-mail available on request!), when contacting the opposition to re-arrange they came back saying they had a team. As people know we play nice and rather than enforce a result we scrambled an XI together, ruining any chance of a Sunday XI friendly for some but paid-up members from that squad were offered the chance. Those who declined or were unable missed out on a tremendous game.

Neil Foster v WVCC June 2018

Sunday XI Nearly Achieve Improbable Win

Sunday 3rd June 2018
Friendly
Whiteley Village 187 all out (37 overs)
Stoke D’Abernon 183 for 9 (40 overs)
Whiteley Village won by 4 runs

Thanks to Whiteley Village for offering this fixture and then playing it in the way that they did. Poor responses to requests for availability meant we were only able to advertise for a fixture late in the week and by then there were no appropriate home matches were on the boards. The most attractive one left was this local away match, the slight reservation being that it was against an opposition who had set themselves up to play a League game and had Walton-on-Thames 1s players – including their Overseas – who had lost their Sunday league opposition, and we all know what happened at Byfleet last year when we stepped in in similar circumstances. Chat ahead of the match and at the toss about relative strengths led to the Stoke XI fielding first.

Sunday XI thrash the Richmond Nomads

Sunday 20th May 2018
Friendly
Richmond Nomads 117 all out (28 overs)
Stoke D’Abernon 120 for 0 (21.3 overs)
Stoke D’Abernon won by 10 wickets

Stoke made very short work of a Richmond Nomads side who made a curious decision to choose to bat despite midweek discussions about relative strengths and the result of last year’s emergency fixture.

Sunday XI v Battersea Eagles 2018

Sunday XI beaten by the Battersea Eagles

Sunday 6th May 2018
Friendly
Battersea Eagles 168 for 7 (40 overs)
Stoke D’Abernon 125 all out (34.3 overs)
Battersea Eagles won by 43 runs

The Sunday XI opened their season with a defeat but the sensible decision to ensure everyone got overs & fielding into their legs and the batsmen time in the middle at the expense of the result was the right one.

Debut Century for Reino Grobler as Stoke win Big at Woodmansterne

Saturday 23rd September 2017
Friendly
Stoke D’Abernon 181 all out (38 overs)
Woodmansterne 49 all out (15.5 overs)

In, (probably), our final match of the season we travelled to Woodmansterne and played out an enjoyable, yet unusually one-sided, match on a lovely September afternoon.

Thomsons x3 - August 2017

Nine Man Sunday side nearly beat Woodmansterne

Sunday 27th August 2017
Friendly
Woodmansterne 174 for 8 (40 overs)
Stoke D’Abernon 148 all out (38.3 overs)
Woodmansterne won by 26 runs

A player drop-out the day before the match and another unable to attend on the day left the Stoke Sunday side with just nine men but the team, well led by Will Thomson who involved everyone, put up a good show against welcoming hosts.

Paddy Wilson 5-23 v Oxshott 2017

Sunday XI win at Oxshott. Paddy Wilson 5 for 23

Sunday 20th August 2017
Friendly
Stoke D’Abernon 198 for 4 (40 overs)
Maori Oxshott 158 for 9 (40 overs)
Stoke D’Abernon won by 40 runs

Firstly a thanks to Maori Oxshott for flipping this fixture to theirs to give us the chance of an additional home Sunday fixture. Excellent hospitality as always, and a fun game where both sides played to a finish despite some pretty horrible rain for the last section of the chase.
