“Hoppy” has to be one of the first names on the teamsheet. Mr.Reliable in many ways, I can’t think of a game where he hasn’t contributed with either the ball, the bat or in the field. I’ll put him at the top of the order because the rest of this line-up likes to have a slog and we need someone to at least try and stick around. Plus we need him to lead the warm up and roll the wicket.

I’ve had 16 seasons at Stoke, (so far), during which time I’ve played alongside hundreds of other players of varying abilities. Selecting the best will always be a matter of judgement so feel free to disagree with my selections – I know some of you will. I’ve decided for the purposes of this list that I have to have played at least 10 games with each player. That way I’ve been able to disregard anyone I’ve just played the odd one or two games with. Listening to an old audio-book of Richie Benaud’s, in it he devotes a couple of chapters to what he calls “My Greatest XI.” By his definition they had to:
* Be brilliant cricketers, characters and good mixers on & off the pitch as they would be representing him. Read more
* Have a beneficial effect on the game, be champions and have left an influence on cricket.
* Play on good pitches with pace, good for shots and fast bowlers, with spin to come into the game later on.
