2020 – A statistical review

The strangest of years but still one for the stattos amongst us to get our teeth into.

World events meant we had the latest start ever to a season – 18th July – and our enthusiasm to play meant that we also had the latest finish – 10th October – the previous record of the 1st October, (three previous occasions), would also have been beaten had we played the fixture we arranged with Oxted & Limpsfield for the 3rd October, but torrential rain in Limpsfield in the week ruined that plan. Club President Stephen Finch was clearly determined not to lose his claim to be an active player to have last played in October, turning out on 10/10/2020 to add to his last October appearance on 01/10/1977! Best Ever Stoke Bowlers in the Surrey Championship?

So we’re about to start our 11th season in the Surrey Championship, and our first in Division 2 after three successive promotions.

Whilst our progress through the divisions has relied on a combination of batting, bowling, fielding and keeping excellences, not to mention tremendous team spirit and the support network behind the scenes; an article on CricInfo appeared in the off-season penned by Anantha Narayanan who chose to look at the role played by the bowlers in the success of any team. It would be remiss of us not to look at how our bowlers have done in comparison! Read more

Bowled Out by a Stoker

This week’s “Ask Steven” feature on CricInfo saw one follower ask:

2nd XI Champions in 2008

With Pagie reminiscing about the 1st XI’s promotion day out at Sanderstead in 2008, (http://www.stokecc.co.uk/2017/02/04/my-greatest-xi-andy-page/), the same day the 2nd XI crushed Lingfield to secure the Championship of the 2nd XI competition. Five of Richie P’s greatest XI, (http://www.stokecc.co.uk/2016/12/11/stoke-dabernon-advent-calendar-2016-11/), were in the side that day, and a few were out with Logie last week. Here is the team… Read more

My Greatest XI : Dom Morley

The next Stoker to put forward his squad and greatest final XI is Dom Morley, who has written to us from his placement in the States…

Had a bit of time on my hands out here in Montana so thought I’d chip in to the best XI that I’ve played with debate, although mine is a very modern team: Read more
