Stoke D’Abernon won by 141 runs
Back in 1986 a little village club in Stoke D’Abernon travelled to Bramley needing a win to secure promotion from the second division of the Morrant Wey Valley League, a competition several divisions below even the bottom division of the Surrey Championship. On the day one of Stoke’s greatest ever batsmen, Ian Wellman, made an unbeaten 104 and one of the most talismanic players ever to play for the Club, Mike Cooper, took 5 for 7 to get the job done. Stoke D’Abernon won by 157 runs
A big win at The Rec put Stoke’s 1st XI in pole position for a fourth successive promotion.
A great day off the pitch for the Club on Sunday as two of our finest made shortlists for an Outstanding Services to Cricket Award.
The OSCAs recognise the hard work thousands of volunteers across Surrey put into the recreational game. An OSCA nomination is a great way for the Surrey Cricket Foundation to say thank you to your volunteers.

Stoke D’Abernon won by 133 runs
Stoke completed a win double over Worcester Park to move into second place in the table.
Stoke’s 1st XI had control throughout this 2nd v 3rd encounter at Pixham Lane but for the second time in three weeks had to settle for a winning draw with the last pair at the wicket.
Batting first on winning the toss James Trower and Ian Hopton, (36), added 104 for the first wicket. Trower, (75), and No.3 Tristan Caviet both fell with the score on 129; but James Corbishley and Alastair Curran kept the board moving by adding another 81, Corbishley making 23 of them.
By now Curran was in full flow; partnerships of 50 with Tim Frost, then 30 with Roddy Kelso, (24), saw him complete a maiden 1st XI League century before checking out on 101 with eleven fours and three sixes.
Stoke continued to make Dorking’s bowlers and fielders toil in the heat and closed their innings on 308 for 8.
After tea Dorking’s openers Erasmus and Johnson gave the chase a go with a rapid partnership of 68; Hopton breaking it with a return catch to account for Johnson for 27 – his 300th wicket for the Club – then Tom Dennis took out the Division’s leading run-scorer for 43.
The latter’s dismissal seemed to send a shockwave through the home dressing room as soon after they 112 for 7 as Hopton and Will Frost, (2 for 37), worked their way through the middle and lower order.
With overs running out Curran’s good day continued when he took a first Championship wicket to remove Ward; Hopton, (4 for 22), then castled No.10 Edwards, but Corbett and last man Quinn negotiated the final deliveries to secure the draw.
We reach the half-way stage of the season next week as Farnham visit the Stoke Rec.

Not a great start as Geoff Vinall departs before the Barmy Army could break into their rendition of “…and Number One is Geoffrey V…” but Tom Frost hit the first maximum of the evening with Justin Jones knocking it around at the other end.

Frost plants two more maximums into the crowd, and with a couple of singles also nudged becomes the first enforced retirement of the evening at 20 not out. Next man Shawn Dyson ends the over with a four and a two.

Klimcke concedes ‘only’ 15 as Jones and Dyson trade boundaries.

Dyson plants Will Frost into the crowd, and then into the car park in successive deliveries. A single then means an enforced retirement.

The first of two, (by rule), from captain Cheeseman starts with a wicket as Harry Nawaz cuts to Oli Slipper. Jones retires after a couple of boundaries meaning two new bats in the form of Fraser Slater and Club Captain James Trower.

Ian Hopton bowls the only over of the match not to contain a boundary as the batsmen garner six from six.

The only runs off the bat to Trower as Slipper concedes just four; Slater unlucky to face one of the better bowlers on the night.

Cheeseman again. A mixed bag, including the wicket of Slater, but not as successful as his previous set as Trower moves to 20, (retired, but leans on his bat at the other end to keep the game moving), leaving Kevin Morgan the last few deliveries – caught off a no-ball off one of them, bowled off the free hit, thus helping to register a nice red-inker.

Stoke were set one of the highest totals ever made by an opposition at The Rec, and they gave it a go but eventually fell to defeat.
Opener Wood, who made 96 and 101 (retired) in his other two visits to Stoke added another 112 to his count. Gibbs made 92 and there were healthy partnerships throughout the innings; Ian Hopton, (10-1-68-3), and Shawn Dyson, (10-0-42-2), shared five wickets as Stoke picked up some useful bowling points; there was a wicket each for Will Frost and Tim Handel to go with two run outs near the end. The final total was 310 for 9.
Stoke made a bad start in reply, slipping to 28 for 4; then 48 for 5 despite of 26 by James Trower. Alastair Curran, (47), and Hopton, (18), near on doubled the total but Stoke were staring down the barrel at 126 for 8 as they and others departed.
Robbie Blackburn smashed eleven fours and a six to register his third half-century for the Club before checking out on 65 from 39 balls faced. Will Frost, (15 not out), continued his good form with the bat but aided by 5 for 44 from Trimmings Old Rutlishians were back to winning ways after a surprise defeat last week.
Next week mid-table Stoke travel to Master Park in Oxted to re-acquaint themselves with good friends Oxted & Limpsfield.
