Great wins for the Under 10s and Under 11s

Sunday 19th May 2019
Mid-Surrey Colts League Under 10 Cup – Round 1
Spencer U10 99 all out (16.1 overs)
Stoke D’Abernon U10 99 for 9 (20 overs)
Stoke D’Abernon U10 won by losing fewer wickets

What a game! All of the boys were just magnificent. Spencer have one of the largest if not the largest colts sections in Surrey and it is no mean feat to put them into second place. A fantastic TEAM effort from all of the boys and everyone contributed to bring the game to a last over/last ball nail biter! Read more

Colts Awards Night – Friday 7th September

We will be holding the Colts’ Awards evening this Friday, 7th September. The Club will be open from 6pm onwards.

The BBQ and bar will be in full flow with car parking on the outfield. Age-group prizes will be handed out along with the prestigious Derek Wellman Cup.

The Club will also be open from 6pm on Wednesday for anyone who wants a hit ahead of this weekend’s senior cricket. As always the bar will be open afterwards. A couple of pairs of hands to help with a bit of tidying up from the weekend/sort the sightscreens would be massively appreciated.

Hope to see you for either/both of these events…

Finally some cricket!

After a total washout of the senior games so far this year, a Stoke XI made it on to the field courtesy of the colts’ section. Kevin provides his match report here:

Sunday 29th April 2018
Mid-Surrey Colts League – Under 12
Stoke D’Abernon U12 109 for 9 (20 overs)
Spencer U12 110 for 3 (19.1 overs)
Spencer U12 won by 8 wickets

The last match as U11s in 2017 saw Stoke hosting Spencer in the Cup Final; rather neatly the first match of the U12 season saw the friendly rivals meet up again. The Battersea Park pitch had been rated 50:50 on the previous evening’s inspection but no overnight rain gave the teams a chance to play. The match was not up to the standard of the Cup Final thriller but the result alas was the same with Spencer hitting the winning runs in the final over.

Both sides played with good spirit in chilly conditions, bowlers’ spikes slipping on landing & fielders’ cold hands saw a few spills though Jack T took one difficult catch and Seb D a tidy one in the slips.

The pitch held up a little better than expected for batters; Stoke debutant Arren S opened well with Max B though found scoring a little slow against Spencer’s good bowlers & good fielding.

Seb D managed to get the scoreboard running, James M played some risky shots and got away with it, Marcus N rallied well down the order however 109 was a low total to defend. Spencer bowler Shaheer had a particularly good day taking 6 of his side’s wickets.

Spencer in reply were quite rapid in scoring helped by extras, every Stoke player got to bowl to help blow off some early season cobwebs. There were spells where they pinned back the batters and indeed towards the end a glimmer of hope that overs might run out.

Not to be however as Spencer showed cool heads to play the game out.

It was good to be playing though and both sides & supporters have hopefully thawed out by now. A big shout out to Martin Bednall for scoring – his hands were blue at the end of the match!

Spriegel to assist Stoke

Great news in from Kevin, our Director of Colts Cricket who writes:

Just to share some information from Surrey’s Performance Department. This attached letter from Academy Director Gareth Townsend, (Gareth Townsend Letter), provides background to some tweaks they are looking to introduce to their junior talent ID programme from Under 10 upwards.

Over the years they have identified between 70% to 90% of players in their programme come from just 30 clubs countywide. Stoke, and reps from the other 29 were invited to a meeting just before Christmas, the slides from this presentation can be viewed here: Meeting with Key Clubs

A closer relationship with clubs, they hope, will improve player development for those currently in the system, and potentially improve their scouting capabilities for any players they may be missing.

The 30 clubs are divided into three groups, each will have a dedicated contact, Matthew Spriegel the former Surrey & Northants player will be looking after us.

For players in the system, Surrey aim to be better at giving clubs feedback to be better joined up regarding player development.

Welcome on board, Matt! See you at Stoke soon.

Excellent Feedback at the Mid Surrey League AGM

The Mid-Surrey Cricket League AGM was held last week and Stoke collected some excellent feedback.

At U11 level we were runners up to Ashtead in the Spirit of Cricket awards, and at both U10 & U11 level we were awarded maximum points for our umpiring, so a big well done to all those parents who umpired in the season. Markings here, (click on the image to enlarge.)

Under 11 and Under 10 Markings for 2017

The following was also in the Under 11s League report: “The cup was won by Spencer in an exciting match at Stoke D’Abernon. Behaviour in a tense encounter was exemplary, and I can only congratulate the respective managers for their part in that.”

This paragraph is even better in the context of the whole report where there was comment about some less than acceptable behaviours from players and parents at other games involving other clubs.

The reports and accounts received by Kevin from the League also included a list of all the League and Cup winners from 1989 to 2017:

View the list here : Mid Surrey League & Cup Winners 1989-2017

Stoke are on this roll of honour in several places. “Maybe some current 1st XI & 2nd XI players played in these teams and won medals in these age groups?” Kevin asks. If you were, let us know!

If anyone wants to see the minutes, reports and accounts in full, please drop Kevin a line.

Colts Awards – Sunday 3rd

Whilst the Sunday XI were taking care of business in Thames Ditton, the Colts’ awards were being handed out at HQ.

A good event considering the weather. Approximately 100 turned up, including some brave hungover seniors; Ian Hopton, Shawn Dyson, Dan Gluckman, Tom Frost, Will Frost, James Trower, Max Subba Row, Andy Berry, Jack Raimondo and Charlie Hill.

The games were cancelled due to rain, but the BBQ and the bar did a brisk trade.

President Finch mingled and handed out the awards.

Colts Director Kevin Morgan has penned this review of the day:

With the Stoke Molesey Ladies kindly re-arranging their match the ground became free for Sunday 3rd September and an opportunity to move Colts Awards from a weekday evening to a weekend. Plans were quickly put in place to run games for the kids before the square is re-laid. The intentions were good but it turned out quite a percentage of parents and children had prior commitments. Still with many acceptances and food delivered, volunteers on rota, we dived in and soldiered on. Read more

Chairman’s August 2017 Newsletter

Dear Members!

I hope you have enjoyed a good summer break with your family. A short note with some important news about our Club.

President
Philip Jansen has decided to step down as President of our Club, having held the post for three years. He’s been a great help to me and has been a generous donor when we were raising funds to extend our clubhouse.

I am delighted to confirm that Stephen Finch will replace Philip as Club President. Many of you will already know him as a Sunday regular. He joined our Club in 1976 as a 1st XI player, became Club Captain in 1983 and moved into Sunday cricket when his knees and eyes started to lose their edge!

He has thus far amassed 5705 runs, 515 wickets and 176 catches in his 41 year career with Stoke. For several years he was Sunday Captain and he has helped many young players make the transition into adult cricket. Most important of all, Stephen is passionate about our Club and was one of several founder donors when we raised £250k to extend the Clubhouse. I’m looking forward to working with him.

Senior Cricket
We’ve enjoyed another outstanding season in the Surrey Championship. The final league matches will be played on Saturday and I’m delighted to announce our 1st XI has already secured promotion to Division 3. Our 2nd XI will follow suit if they win on Saturday.

Special credit to the 23 players who have turned out for the 1s during the first seventeen weeks, and to all the players in both teams putting the team requirements before their own preferences. James Trower has led the 1s to back-to-back promotions in 2016 and 2017. James is one of many to have progressed through our system into senior cricket, and I’m proud to say that 7 or 8 former colts have played in every 1st XI match this season. Jase Earl has been outstanding with the 2nd XI and has introduced several talented youngsters into senior cricket.

Colts Awards
Kevin Morgan has e-mailed to confirm that the Colts Awards date had moved from Friday 8th September 2017 to Sunday 3rd September 2017. The start time will be 4.30pm. There will be a BBQ, a few field games and the bar will be open.

Please join us!

Best wishes.
