Centuries on Debut / Time Taken to Make First Hundred

Ben Foakes made a century in his first Test innings last week, and this fitted in nicely with some other analysis we were doing after CricInfo were asked to look at one or two things by their followers.

Four Stokers have made a century on their debut, (in Claire Trafford’s case she arrived on the scene with a score of 213 not out!), and many others have got to three figures in pretty quick time.

Opened the Batting and the Bowling in the same League Match

Last week’s Ask Steven column on CricInfo looked at people who opened the batting and the bowling in the same ODI. The question and the answer was:

Q : Mehidy Hasan opened the batting and bowling for Bangladesh in the Asia Cup final. How many times has this happened?

Oxshott v Stoke September 2018

Late season fun at Oxshott

Sunday 16th September 2018
Friendly
Stoke D’Abernon 220 for 5 (40 overs)
Maori Oxshott 222 for 5 (38.4 overs)
Maori Oxshott won by 4 wickets

With the clubs in different divisions in League cricket and the pre-season friendly wiped out by rain it took until mid-September to play a game against our friends and neighbours this year. It was worth the wait, though, as the sides played out an enjoyable match. Stoke took this one deep but the home side timed their run chase well with former Stoker George Depree pulling a six to win to and end his reign as Maori Oxshott’s Sunday skipper.

Finch 85 not out and Phipps 51 not out v Whiteley Village and Kingstonian September 2018

Two Sunday XI Matches – Two Wins! – President 85*

Sunday 9th September 2018
Incredible availability meant that we needed to source an additional Sunday fixture to the one already in the card against Kingstonian. Our friends from Whiteley Village had an ad on the board, and a call to them resulted in a second game being agreed meaning everyone who was available at the time got a chance to play.

Friendly
Hampton Wick Royal 180 all out (39.3 overs)

With good availability the Team Secretary was tasked with sourcing a fixture for an additional XI and an early offer was received from our friends at Hampton Wick Royal. Fifteen available became eight by the Friday afternoon, said TS one of the casualties when his body reminded him on Thursday that running suicidal singles was a thing of decades past.

3s v Epsom Methodists June 2018

3rd XI Victorious. McMillan 70, Hafeez 57. 2s Lose.

Saturday 23rd June 2018
Friendly
Stoke D’Abernon 3rd XI 197 for 8 (40 overs)
Epsom Methodists 175 for 8 (40 overs)
Stoke D’Abernon 3rd XI won by 22 runs

Good availability at the beginning of the week allowed us to accept the offer of an invitation to play the Epsom Methodists. EMCC are one of our traditional ‘Sunday XI’ opponents but a crammed fixture programme at the Rec meant this was one we had to miss this year…so it was great when they were able to host a Saturday game and enough of our ‘I’ll play either day’ candidates were able to attend.

Sunday XI v Cheam 10 June 2018

Sunday XI win at Cheam

Sunday 10th June 2018
Friendly
Stoke D’Abernon 226 for 7 (40 overs)
Cheam 154 all out (35.5 overs)
Stoke D’Abernon won by 72 runs

Stoke’s Sunday XI recorded an impressive win at Cheam who were, as ever, welcoming hosts. There was the added bonus of the game being moved to Cheam’s main pitch after their scheduled Development Trust League game against Guildford was scratched by their opposition. Oddly one of their Development XI couldn’t be cajoled into this fixture so we faced a short-handed opposition for the second week running.

My Greatest XI – Adrian Mills

The latest Stoker to submit his Greatest XI is our newest member of the 500-club Adrian Mills. Selected by many others in their best ever sides, it’s time for Po to share his own selection with the world. Po writes…

I’ve had 16 seasons at Stoke, (so far), during which time I’ve played alongside hundreds of other players of varying abilities. Selecting the best will always be a matter of judgement so feel free to disagree with my selections – I know some of you will. I’ve decided for the purposes of this list that I have to have played at least 10 games with each player. That way I’ve been able to disregard anyone I’ve just played the odd one or two games with. Here goes…
