Good availability coupled with Sunday’s cycling event giving players the ‘choice’ of Saturday or nothing for their cricket fix this weekend meant an extra friendly fixture was arranged.

Firstly some thank-yous in light of some late call-ups to the Trust League. To Jase Earl, Duncan Elder and Danny Broomfield for making themselves available late in the day to ensure we had a full XI, Danny in particular subbing in for original selection Alfie B! Jo P still provided a sandwich service, and the players themselves hastily added provisions to bulk up the tea.

A stronger than normal Stoke Sunday XI met a weaker than normal Vultures side and the match was over in quick time.

What was billed as a possible tight contest between two of Surrey’s better academies was anything but as Stoke put in a commanding performance to progress to Round 2.

A century for Jase Earl at the Rec as Stoke avenged their mid-week T20 defeat.
Stoke batted first on the same pitch used by the 2nd XI the previous day; Nico Spreeth and Alistair McMillan had to use all their skill and be wary of the low bounce. Consequently runs were hard to come by early doors. Spreeth survived a chance on the circle, but didn’t have the patience of his partner and departed in a similar fashion in the eighth over.

Stoke’s Sunday XI squandered an excellent platform set by Raja Singh, (31), and Greg Routley, (72 from 45 with eight fours and four sixes), who added 101 for the 2nd wicket after batting first on winning the toss.

Hampton Hill made a welcome return to the Stoke Rec after a number of years of being off the card, we speculated that it was the lengthening of the League programme in the mid-1990s that meant something had to give. (One of the opposition remembered the old changing rooms being behind the bowler’s arm at the Blundell Lane end the last time he played here, and was unaware of the current clubhouse being where it is today!)
