Sunday Defeats (x2) but two Fixtures Fulfilled

Excellent availability after last weekend’s sheets came in led to us investigating a second Sunday fixture. As appears to be the norm the pool of 25 available fell back to 18 once the fixtures had been booked(!) but planning ahead for this we booked in Battersea Eagles for the game at Stoke knowing that if we did have any availability issues, our good friend Khalid Harris would probably be able to bring a spare or two – after a ring around of our own for extra resources we sent an XI to Thames Ditton, (although the curse continued as only ten showed!), and gave Stoke debuts to two loan signings at the Rec. After the euphoria of the previous day cricket resumed with an entertaining game at Giggs Hill Green, Stoke emerging victorious by 11 runs. Both sides should take a lot of credit for playing through persistent drizzle and on occasion arctic conditions. Read more

A player drop-out the day before the match and another unable to attend on the day left the Stoke Sunday side with just nine men but the team, well led by Will Thomson who involved everyone, put up a good show against welcoming hosts. Read more

A mixed XI from Stoke’s playing resources kicked off the 2017 season and suffered defeat despite having control for long periods. Losing having taken six of the opposition’s wickets in the first 10.5 overs of the fielding effort is one of the more bizarre ways to lose a game, but credit to the opposition who stayed committed to their brand of cricket and hoped a couple of players would come off. Stoke’s run of thirteen straight wins in all senior cricket came to an end with a narrow defeat in an exciting game at the Rec. Full credit to visiting captain Wilkinson for keeping the game live which would not have been the approach in a League game. Read more

Great relations between Stoke and Sutton were further enhanced as both Clubs got a game on despite Stoke not having enough Under 17s, (due to holidays), to play the original cup tie. The Stokers originally selected, (many well under the age of 17), were supplemented by some senior assistance from Rod, Ralphie and Charlie Thomas. Read more
