After a narrow 3 run victory against Valley End on Sunday, the U13s travelled to Chobham hoping to extend their lead at the top of the table.

The Pavillion at Headley Cricket Club, just a short 7 iron down the road from the gates of Beaverbrook Golf Club, hosted our U13s fixture against Ashtead. The hosts won the toss and elected to bat first.

Following on from our victory against Ashtead last week, the U13s returned to the Rec for their first home game of the season. Skipper Cheeseman won the toss and elected to field first; the overnight rain and the teams’ recent success chasing runs informing his decision.

What a game! All of the boys were just magnificent. Spencer have one of the largest if not the largest colts sections in Surrey and it is no mean feat to put them into second place. A fantastic TEAM effort from all of the boys and everyone contributed to bring the game to a last over/last ball nail biter!

The Stoke U14 team’s first match of the season was a cup game at Leatherhead and proved to be a nail biter. Stoke only had 10 players, most of whom were U13 and were fielding two new players and one with a broken thumb so the odds were stacked against us!

Both teams could only muster 10 players each for this fixture, Stoke had two U13s, the rest U12s, Teddington similarly bolstered from their U12s.
Teddington won the toss & put Stoke into bat; our two U13s Alex M & Ella C opening and both playing good shots from the off. Alex looked in very good nick until a caught & bowled despatched him.
Ella then partnered with Aarav M and both kept the scoreboard ticking. Ella got to retirement first, her 31 runs included no fewer than seven fours. Aarav’s retiring later on 32 with six fours and one six both had taken full advantage of a rock hard outfield.
Sam P was unlucky to be bowled by an absolute jaffa having just got off the mark, Jack T worked hard for 14 runs, his quick running between the wickets in the heat most impressive, James M 16 runs and Max B 5 runs saw out the final few overs.
Stoke would have similarly put Teddington in to bat first to avoid fielding second as the day got hotter. The team however worked hard delivering one of our best displays this season.
Teddington didn’t quite show the same batting threat as Stoke but found enough boundaries to keep the scoreboard going. Jake P and Sam P were outstanding in the deep, alternating various fielding positions and saving anything which evaded Alex behind the stumps.
Aarav G’s off spin has been hugely effective this season and he was unlucky not to get more from another skilful display. Wickets were proving difficult until Ella clean bowled two in a row, beating batters with ferocious pace. The hat-trick delivery was not too far away but the batter survived.
Another tricky umpire call similar to last week gave the benefit of the doubt to one batter, Alex gloving one from James’ bowling but unclear if bat had made contact, at least to the umpire if not the Stoke players.
All this pressure ended up with a close run chase. With three overs to go Teddington needed 16 runs, two overs to go they needed 10 but a miserly over from Aarav G gave away just two singles. With 8 needed to win off the final over and Stoke guarding the boundary Jack bowled with terrific line & length to limit the visitors to just three singles much to the delight of the home crowd.
Fair to say we have not had much luck in the 30 over Academy League. That run continued on a scorcher of a day at Parkside on Sunday, writes Kevin Morgan.
Stoke won the toss and elected to bat. Guildford had an impressive bowling unit, all pretty rapid and accurate, giving little in the way of scoring opportunities or extras.
Arren S & Aaarav G opened for us, the latter digging in well as he lost partners first Arren falling for 1, then Jared H & James M both arriving, hitting a four then falling for 6 runs a piece. All three wickets were bowled. That brought Charlie B to the crease who was to remain for a well earned not out, scoring an unbeaten and hard fought 44, partnering firstly with Aarav who fell for 12 runs; then Luke P who blasted an entertaining 31 all over the ground including six fours; Ella C an almost as rapid 19; then an unbeaten 10 from Jack T.
This was Stoke’s highest score in the Academy League so far and at last something to defend. Things looked as sunny as the weather when opening bowlers Jack opened with 5 dots in his first over followed by a first wicket in the second over from Max B’s bowling. Guildford’s batter going for a run that wasn’t there, great collect & throw from Ella to wicketkeeper Jared who had the luxury with both batters stood contemplating the situation from the bowler’s end.
Guildford started to score however and on a fast outfield anything hit-able got despatched. A confident shout from Jared, convinced he had taken a catch from a nick off Charlie’s bowling but turned down by the umpire. Square-leg umpire, (the author of this report), too far away to hear anything. How different things could be as that batter went on to score 50.
Stoke’s bowlers toiled as the temperature rose, frequent drinks breaks required as Guildford continued to plunder runs. Stoke missed the odd rare catching opportunity and a few misfields contributed. It took till the 21st over for the next breakthrough, James getting a hand to a straight drive from his own delivery then on to the stumps, the unlucky non-striker batter out of his crease and out for 39 runs.
With five overs left Guildford needed just 19 runs. Stoke tried to pin the scoring down further but Guildford had time. Arren bowled a dangerous batter in the 26th over with Guildford needing 14 after a carless mis-field went for four, the hours in the sun taking their toll.
Jared them took a catch from Aarav’s bowling in the 28th over as the visitors started to toil themselves and singles started to dry up. At the start of the 29th Guildford needed just four but Stoke were still thinking of winning, three dot deliveries from Charlie were making things interesting, until the fourth was pulled sweetly right between James & Jack in the field and raced for four.
The spectators were denied a grandstand finish, Stoke were left to rue what could have been.
Though not the desired result another good game, and we take the positives from this League, the longer format proving itself useful for player development.
