League Update

On what would have been the first League games of the season the Surrey Championship have issued this notice:

As we have now reached the milestone of what should have been the first day of the 2020 League campaign, we are sending a very different pre-season check-in. We truly hope that first and foremost this update finds you and yours all safe & well.

We continue to be hopeful that sometime soon we can share clarity around what both Surrey Championship may look like moving forward but, as with many aspects of life just now, we await news and clear guidance to enable us to do that.

What we can share is the following:

The League Committee is working closely the ECB, Surrey Cricket Foundation and other Premier Leagues in the UK, to establish forward-looking plans for cricket. As you will know there is no concrete information for any of us around what the ‘new normal’ might look like nor when we might play cricket once again but, in line with the professional game we do know the ECB have early July as their earliest resumption at the time of writing.

Nonetheless, conversations continue pretty much daily to ensure we don’t waste a minute once clear guidance is issued.

As your League Committee we are creating short, mid & long term plans to determine the shape of the Surrey Championship for any remainder of the 2020 season and indeed looking out to 2021.

We are forming sub-committees to help deal with the new challenges COVID-19 is creating for all volunteer workforces running sport and we will need more input and support from club committees to help us all decide how to deal with this unprecedented change to ‘normal.‘

It surely goes without saying, but for the avoidance of doubt, there are no league requirements for registration, results updating, etc sitting with clubs at all until we decide as a committee how we will progress.

For now, we have unpublished fixtures on Play-Cricket and we are actively reviewing how best to manage further aspects of league life and will keep in touch.

There are numerous bodies creating and sharing resources focusing on the welfare & longevity of clubs at this time and we are confident you are all making use of many of these already.

Yours in Sport
The Surrey Championship Committee
