AJ Fordham Surrey Championship
Sanderstead 132 all out (30.2 overs)
Stoke D’Abernon 133 for 4 (41.2 overs)
Stoke D’Abernon won by 6 wickets
Sanderstead has always been a happy hunting ground for Stoke’s 1st XI and the trend continued with a comfortable win.
Fielding first Stoke made a great start when Toby Tarrant castled both openers, Robbie Blackburn nicked off the next, Tarrant, (3 for 51), gave Tom Frost a second catch soon after; and Blackburn, (1 for 24), then deflected a ball with his boot back on to the stumps on his follow through to run out the non-striker. 35 for 5 was soon 46 for 6 when Tom Dennis, (also 1 for 24), bowled Kuckreja with his first delivery.
As is often the case a partnership can then develop. Sobers, (no, not that one), and McKinnon added 60 before the former was bowled by Ian Hopton for 33, (2×4, 3×6), Mike Enslin snared No.9 Wilson, Hopton, (2 for 26), made it 130 for 9 for, then completed the innings with throw from the deep to run out top scorer McKinnon for 46.
McKinnon faced only 43 balls for his runs and with only 30.2 overs bowled this led to a 45 minute session before tea.
Max Subba Row and James Trower comfortably negotiated the overs and Stoke went to the break with 59 on the board for no loss.
With time not an issue the scoring rate slowed when play resumed; mainly due to Kuckreja who sent down 14 overs for just 13 and picked up the wickets of Trower and Tristan Caviet in quick succession; but Subba Row passed 50, James Corbishley manoeuvred the ball well as he so often does, to keep Stoke in control.
Subba Row eventually checked out on 59; Tom Frost added ten more before being bowled; but Corbishley, (36 not out), and Roddy Kelso, 5 not out), took Stoke home to a six wicket victory.
The result leaves Sanderstead bottom of the table and in a division where everyone seems to be capable of beating everyone, Stoke now sit in third place; but four clubs could mathematically go past them next week. On a more positive note, 3rd could become 2nd with victory over the current occupiers of that spot, Dorking, to whom they travel next week.
