Great wins for the Under 10s and Under 11s

Sunday 19th May 2019
Mid-Surrey Colts League Under 10 Cup – Round 1
Spencer U10 99 all out (16.1 overs)
Stoke D’Abernon U10 99 for 9 (20 overs)
Stoke D’Abernon U10 won by losing fewer wickets

What a game! All of the boys were just magnificent. Spencer have one of the largest if not the largest colts sections in Surrey and it is no mean feat to put them into second place. A fantastic TEAM effort from all of the boys and everyone contributed to bring the game to a last over/last ball nail biter!

Skipper Roark as per usual won the toss and very sensibly decided to bowl in overcast conditions – a great decision.

With our fiery attack we then set about them. Morgan and Sammy opened the bowling with pace and accuracy restricting the run rate in the first four overs. Our next pair Toby and Jack then came flying in with the same pace and accuracy. 8 overs down and we had taken 5 wickets. Brilliant bowling and fantastic fielding. With a run out and also two great catches – a very sharp chance taken by Sammy at square leg, (going like a rocket), which he just casually plucked out of the air. Jack three wickets, Toby one.

Our next pair – Sam R and Caleb – then came steaming in. By this time the Spencer opener and danger man was beginning to find his range with some powerful shots. But to their credit Caleb and Sam pinned him back. With his second to last ball Caleb cleaned bowled him.

Gabriel and Roark were then next up and just carried on the overall superb bowling performance. Gabriel cleaned bowled their second highest scorer and Roark took two quick wickets.

With one wicket left – it took Will J just one ball to take this one down!

So Spencer were all out for 99 and nearly 4 overs left to bowl.

Our turn to bat…

We set off like steam train with Toby and Sam R playing some glorious shots to really push the score along. When Toby retired on 25, a fantastic knock including a big six over square leg which had the crowd scattering, we were 35 for no loss.

Spencer then found their length and line and two quick wickets followed. The pressure on the score changed around in their favour for the next few overs.

Will J joined Morgan at the crease and they played brilliantly, pushing quick singles to throw the balance back in our favour. Morgan finished on 19 and Will 8; their partnership crucial to get us back on track.

Jack continued this theme pushing quick singles to keep the score board ticking and second to last over Gabriel cracked a no ball for a further 2.

We then came to the last over with Gabriel and Caleb needing 2 to win the first four balls were perfectly bowled into Caleb’s legs. 2 to win 2 balls to go.

Gabriel turned to me umpiring : “I am going to run.” The bowler bowled and Gabriel set off. Yet another quality ball hit Caleb’s pads. The keeper jumped in front of Caleb – Gabriel was some five yards out – but he threw and the ball missed by inches. Gabriel got in and Caleb was safe at other end.

Incredible. Scores level and one ball to go. I did know right at that moment, but even if we did not score the extra run on last ball we had still won.

The rest is history – the last ball was a beauty but it did not matter as we had won on the same score but with less wickets down.

Roll on the next round – looks like it is Leatherhead.

Thanks to Mark for penning the above.
