Mid Surrey U14 Cup
Leatherhead CC U14s v SDCC U14s Mid Surrey Cup
Stoke D’Abernon U14 102 all out (19.1 overs)
Leatherhead U14 99 all out (19.2)
Stoke D’Abernon U14 won by 3 runs
The Stoke U14 team’s first match of the season was a cup game at Leatherhead and proved to be a nail biter. Stoke only had 10 players, most of whom were U13 and were fielding two new players and one with a broken thumb so the odds were stacked against us!
Stoke batted first and carefully build a decent score of 102 but one that was going to be hard to defend. Notable batting performances came from Arren, James and Gary.
Leatherhead started well in their run chase keeping ahead of target and not losing wickets. Leatherhead then started to pull away during overs 10 to 15 as their opener started to punish any loose balls and it looked like it would be a comfortable win for them.
However the retirement of their opener, (48 off 50 balls), in the 16th over left Leatherhead needing just 10 runs with plenty of wickets and balls to go.
The Stoke team however didn’t lose belief and set about a magnificent spell of bowling and tight fielding. The tension grew over the last three overs as any loose ball or well-timed shot would lose the game.
Playing his first game for Stoke, Josh, bowled the 18th over with Leatherhead needing just 6 runs to win with 4 wickets remaining. The first ball went for two runs – 4 needed off 17 balls!
Josh remained calm under this intense pressure and bowled with pace and unerring accuracy earning a wicket and dot balls. Ella bowled the 19th over with just as much calmness, accuracy and pace getting another wicket.
Skipper and wicketkeeper, Seb, did a fantastic job making no mistakes to gift easy runs to Leatherhead.
Josh then put the game to bed with the final two wickets in the first two balls of the final over!
What a win! Fantastic celebrations at the end.
Player of the Match goes to Josh M for his awesome & nerveless bowling at the death.
A great team performance where the whole team remained positive even when the game looked lost.
Well done to all.
Thanks to Kevin for this match report.
