2nd XI play well but end League season with defeat to Camberley

Saturday 1st September 2018
Travelbag Surrey Championship Division 3 – 2nd XI Competition
Stoke D’Abernon 2nd XI 221 for 9 (50 overs)
Camberley 2nd XI 222 for 4 (34.4 overs)
Camberley 2nd XI won by 6 wickets

More good things from the Desmonds but sadly this one went the way as many others as the visitors chased down Stoke’s total with plenty overs to spare.

Batting first having lost the toss a number of players got starts, notably Will Thomson, (27), Kane Fullalove, (18), and Peter Phipps, (17), but no-one went on, and after losing two wickets in two balls Stoke found themselves 98 for 6.

Stoke fought back, though. Lower order runs from Jack Raimondo, (38), Patrick O’Neill, (37 not out), Rod Thomson and Duncan Elder lifted the total to 221 for 9.

After tea Elder made an early strike but Stoke were unable to get the additional early wickets they craved due to good batting a couple of missed opportunities. Alex Clinton and Fullalove took a wicket each; and when skipper Jase Earl finally dismissed Stephens – who made the most of an early reprieve – for 74, Stoke had a sniff. Sadly Peter, (34 not out), and Hughes, (43 not out), were very capable middle order players and knocked off the rest of the runs in quick time.

A difficult league season for the 2s where not a lot went right despite committed effort from all who played finally comes to an end; but the players always gave of their best and had fun despite the lack of positive results. Spirit remains high and the new challenges that will be faced in Division 4 will be met head on.

Now for a few friendlies…
