Narrow defeat for the 2s despite Zander 66

Saturday 11th August 2018
Travelbag Surrey Championship Division 3 – 2nd XI Competition
Stoke D’Abernon 2nd XI 192 all out (47.2 overs)
Streatham & Marlborough 2nd XI 193 for 8 (36.5 overs)
Streatham & Marlborough 2nd XI won by 2 wickets

A good performance but ultimately the same outcome for the 2nd XI who lost a game that probably would have been won last year.

Jase Earl’s men made their longest away trip of the season and found themselves batting first having lost the toss. Peter Phipps, (20), and Hamza Hafeez, (19), saw off the openers to allow Billy Zander, (66 with 13×4 and 1×6), to tuck into the change bowling.

Stoke were well placed at 116 for 1 but a succession of single figure scores, the returning Steve Wade who was last out for 19 aside, saw Stoke slip to 192 all out with extras, (30), the second top scorer. Fifth and sixth bowlers Catterall, (10-3-29-5), and Sachdev, (8.2-3-33-4), shared nine of the wickets to fall.

In reply Duncan Elder made two early strikes but Streatham & Marlborough’s batsmen kept on swinging. Roddy Kelso took two wickets – one of them was Catterall whose good day continued as he followed up his nap hand with a knock of 46 – and Zander one as the game moved on at pace, (107 for 5 in just the 18th over) – eight sixes were hit in the chase.

Williamson, (45), knocked off more than half of the remaining runs before he was picked up by Jeremy Connell and things got exciting as further wickets for Zander and Earl made it 177 for 8.

With plenty of overs to spare though Satpute was able to bat time and steered the hosts home without further loss and Stoke were left to rue another one that got away.

Next week Stoke host Egham who find themselves still needing a win to be mathematically sure of survival after a run of six games without one, although one of them was drawn and one tied.
