Travelbag Surrey Championship Division 3 – 2nd XI Competition
Sanderstead 2nd XI 231 for 5 declared (49 overs)
Stoke D’Abernon 2nd XI 166 all out (42.5 overs)
Sanderstead 2nd XI won by 65 runs
A 500th career wicket for the Club for Adrian Mills and a Stoke career best 98 from Andy Berry were the highlights of an otherwise unsuccessful trip to Sanderstead for the 2nd XI.
Mills became the 16th Stoker to reach the landmark, and did so with the first wicket of the match when Sanderstead’s opening pair were separated on with the total on 34, Jase Earl taking a catch to dismiss Ranger for 23. Mills doubled his tally for the afternoon when Duncan Elder took a catch to account for McKinnon; but solid partnerships through the middle overs gave Sanderstead the upper hand.
Alex Clinton, (2 for 31), and Jeremy Connell, (1 for 25) – the latter taking a return catch offered by Udall who made 61 – bowled Stoke back into it at 120 for 5; but this was the last wicket taken before tea as Roodt, (66 not out), and Lock, (40 not out), added an unbroken stand of 111 to enable a 49 over declaration at 231 for 5.
Peter Phipps, (15), and Berry added 51 for the opening wicket as Stoke made a good start to the chase, but a succession of rusty batsmen making their first appearances of the season departed for single figures scores. Berry held the innings together and had made 98 of the 150 runs scored to the point of his dismissal. He hit twelve fours and three sixes and faced 106 balls for his runs.
The match ended a few overs later with Stoke 166 all out and just a single bowling and batting point to show for their efforts. Returning players and hopefully a feed from the 1st XI squad should help the push to get out of the relegation places next week when they host Streatham & Marlborough.
