Stoke D’Abernon Ladies 119 for 5 (20 overs)
Spencer Women 111 for 5 (20 overs)
Stoke D’Abernon Ladies won by 8 runs
Match report from Andy Berry:
After the disappointment of having their first match rained off, Stoke D’Abernon Ladies finally got their season up and running on a perfect day in Earlsfield against Spencer.
Fielding five debutants, captain Anya Devon-Berry elected to bat to ease all into the game.
Amy Page, (63 not out), continued her fantastic form from last season, giving the re-formed team an education on patient batting and elegant stroke play. One effortless cover drive was applauded by both teams.
Debutant Maryann Hafiz supported Amy well before being caught and Anya soon departed the same way with a leading edge.
Georgia Verity then joined Amy at the crease and looked comfortable against tight bowling before being bowled for 16. Ella Clinton, (7), and Alice Knight, (5), kept the scoreboard ticking over until Amy retired. The last few overs secured some vital runs from Ailsa Malcolm, (9 not out), and Steph Gibson, giving a target of 120 to Spencer.
The opening bowlers of Ella Clinton and Maria Rawling bowled very well. Particular mention to Maria playing only her second game and grabbing a wicket with a catch from Anya.
Alice Knight, who fielded brilliantly at point, also snatched a great catch off Ella’s bowling helped to maintain pressure on Spencer as wickets tumbled at regular intervals.
Astute field placing and some wonderful bowing from Ailsa, (1-18), and new leg spinner Maryam, (1-22), helped keep Spencer below the run rate, disputes an excellent 53 by their captain Laura Bailey.
Special mention to debutants Amaya Kudagamage and Chloé Daniels for their enthusiastic fielding and a great team spirit for Stoke D’Abernon Ladies’ first win of 2018 in the Surrey Trust League.
