Sunday 6th May 2018
Mid-Surrey Colts Under 12 League Division 1
Stoke D’Abernon U12 128 for 1 (20 overs)
Wimbledon U12 96 for 6 (20 overs)
Stoke D’Abernon U12 won by 32 runs

Sunday saw a crack Stoke team get bragging rights over Wimbledon one of our biggest, (but of course friendly!), rivals, beating them well by 32 runs. Having previously lost by narrow margins, including a cup final it was great to get a win in a convincing manner too.

Put into bat on a wet wicket, Stoke started cautiously against a very good opening attack. Charlie B and Aarav M put together 40 runs off the first 10 overs without losing any wickets. After drinks both openers put pressure on the fielders to good effect and also thumped a few. Both Charlie and Aarav retired at 35. Seb D made a quick-fire and stroke-filled 32 before holing out in the field, (the only Stoke wicket to fall.) Jared H and Oliver B guided Stoke to a competitive 128 for 1 off 20 overs. Wimbledon’s turn to bat…

Stoke started well and gave very little away in the first 10 overs. Similar to Stoke, Wimbledon were 38 for no loss after the first 10 overs, but had the added pressure to chase down a target. Stoke continued to bowl good lines and were productive in claiming 6 wickets and in restricting the opposition to 96 of their 20 overs.

JT bowled a double wicket maiden with Theo S claiming both catches at mid-on, (not to mention being heckled by his big brother from the boundary for doing so.) The other Charlie B, Max P, Seb D and Aarav M claimed a wicket each.

After the loss to Spencer in the first Mid Surrey match, this win gets the team back in the hunt.

Monday 7th May 2018
West Surrey Youth Cricket Under 12 Academy League
Pyrford U12 189 for 4 (30 overs)
Stoke D’Abernon U12 104 for 8 (30 overs)
Pyrford U12 won by 85 runs

The Bank Holiday offered blazing sunshine and a trip to Old Woking CC, a lovely little ground. Alas we came a good second to a solid Pyrford side in our first Academy match of the season. This is the top league we will play in this year and certainly the highest level of opposition several of our players will have faced.

Unfortunately Jake P was ill overnight which left us with nine players. Huge thanks to ten year old Hudson C and nine year old Sam C for stepping in last minute to get us to 11. Their reward was to both take wickets for the U12s with their excellent spin.

Skipper Arren S won the toss and put Pyrford in to bat. Their openers were disciplined and as we worked through our bowlers, giving everyone two overs the batters did the same. Wickets finally started to come with a clean bowled from Arren. James M took two catches in the deep from Sam’s and Hudson’s bowling, and Luke P got his first wicket with his first ball of the season after finishing his wicket-keeping stint.

The other highlight, especially this early in the season, was the standard of fielding from many in the side, especially Sam P and debutant Caleb C.

In reply our run chase never got to the rate required. Arren fell early on lbw, James hit a boundary then was castled by one that stayed low. Opener Max B toiled in the sun for 14 building a good partnership with Ella C. It was Ella who provided the backbone, going through to the end against a very strong bowling attack for an unbeaten 28.

Though victory never looked likely, everyone got valuable match practice and our hosts Pyrford were great company.
