Stoke D’Abernon 173 all out (47.5 overs)
Addiscombe 135 all out (44.5 overs)
Stoke D’Abernon won by 38 runs
Stoke began life in Division 3 with an excellent win despite a total washout of their pre-season programme.
Inserted having lost the toss, Stoke lost early wickets and every mini-revival was cut short by the loss of another; Will Gudgeon, (23), the only member of the top five to pass 20 as the scoreboard showed a rather ominous 68 for 6, half of the wickets taken by Ramsey who returned figures of 9-2-26-3.
Last season runs down the order were in plentiful supply, and league debutant Robbie Blackburn continued the tradition with a counter attack that saw him hit 42 from 37 deliveries with three sixes and a four. At the other end Ian Hopton dug in and a total to bowl at started to build.
Blackburn’s dismissal at 128 for 7 still left Stoke a little short, but Hopton worked with the tail to add a further 45 runs for the last three wickets; eventually left stranded on 37 not out.
In reply Blackburn’s good day continued when he castled visiting skipper Benham early; but Fogarty and Stevens got the board moving, and the total reached 49 without further loss until Shawn Dyson bowled Fogarty for 18.
The bowlers, resources well juggled by Stoke skipper James Trower, stuck to their task, all had good economy rates to create pressure that ultimately told.
Hopton ran through the middle order with a three wicket burst, the first being his 250th wicket for the Club, Toby Tarrant made it 87 for 6 then Will Frost, (10-0-33-1), exposed the tail with a deserved wicket to make it 109 for 7.
No.7 Dhond didn’t receive the support Hopton did in the first innings, and was left unbeaten on 22 as Tom Frost effected the run out of Lineker; then Hopton, (8-2-14-4), and Dyson, (7.5-1.26-2) dismissed the last pair for ducks to complete a 38 run win.
Next weekend Stoke host Purley who won their opening fixture against Staines & Laleham.
