Match Report from Martin Bednall…

Epsom won the toss and elected to bowl.

Luke and Felix opened for Stoke and played themselves in nicely only for Felix to fall in the second over for 4 runs by a great catch from an Epsom fielder. Sam was next in and he and Luke set about putting together a formidable partnership. Luke was retired on 35 runs, Matteo came in but was bowled soon after by the best delivery of the day from Epsom.

Max B came in at No.5 and created another good partnership with Sam until Sam was retired. George was in at No.6 and put on 5 runs before being run out. Louis came in at No.7 and partnered Max to the end scoring 3 runs, (not out), and Max B scored 35 runs, (not out.)

Luke in particular batted well, patient initially and then got three 4s near the end of his innings. Harvin, Jake, Max D and Zach had not batted.

Stoke scored 136 for 3.

Confidence was high, with the message of keeping it tight in the field fully understood by the team.

Max D opened the bowling with a ferocious over, getting a wicket with his third ball. Then came the over of the innings from Zach. Dot, bowled, bowled, dot, bowled, dot!!! Epsom were 4 for 4 and the boys’ confidence was sky high, they all new it was in the bag.

The bowling remained tight for the second of Max and Zach’s overs and then continued with Harvin and Jake. Max B bowled the 9th over and claimed the 5th wicket in a wicket maiden. Louis’ first over was also a maiden. Runs were not coming for Epsom but wickets were also proving difficult as the batsman resorted to blocking rather than playing shots.

Matteo broke the deadlock with his second delivery, Sam was miserly, Luke unfortunate, especially with one delivery that swung beautifully back into the left hander. Jake came back in to the attack for his second spell to devastating effect getting two wickets from his last two balls, (unfortunately he didn’t get a hat-trick.)

Max D bowled the last over knowing victory was secure. Epsom were 70 for 8 at the end, Stoke winning by 66 runs.

The only damning statistic is that Epsom only scored 17 with the bat, Stoke conceded 44 extras!

West Surrey Youth Cricket League Development League Under 9 East
Effingham U9 244 for 5 (16 overs)
Stoke D’Abernon U9 304 for 1 (16 overs)
Stoke D’Abernon U9 won by 60 runs
