Match Doubles in League Cricket

Ian Hopton’s match double of a half-century and a five-for in a 1st XI League match at the weekend was quite a rare species.

Dating back to our first year in the Fuller’s League in 1994, there have been only been four other instances, viz:

12th June 2010 – Ian Hopton – 57 not out and 13.5-3-49-7 v Thames Ditton (h)

14th July 2007 – Siddhartha Lahiri – 20-5-61-6 and 58 v Merstham (a)

7th July 2007 – Siddhartha Lahiri – 77 and 15-5-37-6 v Ewhurst (a)

5th August 2000 – Mike Cooper – 23-5-76-5 and 62 v Southbank (h)

Interestingly Coops’ was in a losing cause.

There have been no 2nd XI League Match doubles since 1994.

Of course the BIG match double is a century and five wickets in the same match. We can’t find any instance in League cricket, but the last recorded match double was by Will Gudgeon who hit 124 then took 6-28 at Thursley in 2006, (Scorecard : http://sdacc.play-cricket.com/website/results/164678).

Our stats auditor, (he of ponytail for those who aren’t aware), will be looking for match doubles in earlier seasons and friendly matches. Watch this space…
