Under 10s Round Up and Nice Feedback

Kevin Morgan reviews the latest Under 10s action:

The U10s found themselves hosting two away fixtures after both opponents were unable to accommodate. We are indebted to Sid Lahiri for providing Parkside’s top pitch at short notice for both matches.

West Surrey Youth Cricket League Cup 2nd Round
Stoke D’Abernon U10 124 for 4 (20 overs)
Pyrford U10 79 all out (18.3 overs)
Stoke D’Abernon U10 won by 45 runs

The long weekend started brightly with a cracking match versus Pyrford in the 2nd round of the cup.

Stoke batting first saw our openers Seb D and James M play a controlled start against excellent opening bowlers. Seb began to move through the gears but fell to an excellent delivery for 10 runs.

Jared then came to the crease to play what has to be the innings of the season so far eventually retiring on 30 runs. Jared batted brilliantly, firstly a fruitful partnership with James who batted with great discipline until a run out for 19, then with Theo S who hit an excellent 16 runs.

Marcus N also looked in fine batting form until a ‘certain’ six was plucked one handed at deep point from Pyrford’s airborne Charlotte L – what a catch it was!

With Oliver B and Jack R our unbeaten batters a good total had been posted.

Seb, for the second time this season, took out the middle stump with the very first delivery! A perfect statement of intent to energise the fielding team. He then took a catch from Max B’s bowling to account for both openers by the second over.

Pyrford however had two excellent batters in fine form who when on to score 26 & 20 runs respectively. Something special had to account for these, his name….Marcus !

A brilliant 3 run outs from Marcus, the pick of the bunch a superb 30 yard direct hit amongst his amazing fielding. Jack T got in on the act with a run out of his own plus a smart catch off his own bowling. Wickets each for Theo & James saw off the tail.

Special mention to Sam P and Felix O who made their first team debuts at short notice and both played well.

A terrific performance with bat, ball and fielding against good opposition, all the more impressive as the core had already played for schools earlier in the afternoon.

Scorecards & stats below courtesy of Pyrford’s manager and his nifty scoring app.

Stoke are now drawn at home in the quarter finals to Valley End who progressed past Weybridge.

Mid-Surrey Colts League Under 10 Pairs
Richmond 238 for 8 (20 overs)
Stoke D’Abernon U10 294 for 4 (20 overs)
Stoke D’Abernon U10 won by 56 runs

Richmond won the toss and elected to bat.

A catch by George A from James M bowling in the second over and tidy bowling from Seb D and James had Richmond with just two runs on the board after the first 24 balls.

Their total then went to negative with an excellent stumping from Jared H from Max P’s bowling followed by a run out in Max’s second over. Jack R then delivered a double wicket maiden over, clean bowling twice. Jack T kept the quality going with a wicket maiden of his own, followed by another maiden from his second over spell.

A couple of our bowlers then struggled a little bit offering Richmond some free runs with extras and some uncharacteristic mis-fields in between dot balls. However discipline was restored with tidying up from Oliver B and Jared both bowling wickets in the final two overs, the latter swapping keeping duties with Max P at the halfway point.

Richmond were a mixed team with some talented U10s & U9s in their ranks along with two players experiencing their very first match. A clear difference between the teams however. Richmond bowled very well throughout to curtail scoring. Stoke however had more than enough quality with Oliver B, Jared and Max P batting well and then a stand out from Seb hitting 22 runs including five 4’s.

Thank you to Simon Richardson for umpiring and Charlie Pelling for scoring.

That puts is on three league wins out of four now as we seek to catch Wimbledon the early pace setters.

Horsley & Send U10’s Festival

Our friends in West Horsley put on another great festival, providing opportunity for the rest of the available squad to get valuable match practice. With some late drop outs the organisers had to re-jig the format but were still able to offer four matches each for the five competing teams. Stoke couldn’t quite manage a victory from any of our four matches but we can satisfy ourselves with finishing firmly in the top five!

Special mentions to Max D and Harvin M who continue to progress well having never played cricket before this season. Tonwyn L whose improvement with bat & ball is clear to see, Felix O, Sam P and George R are clearly excellent additions to the squad, with Max B, Louis J and Jack T providing further quality some good cricket was on display.

On a cold day it was a long event testing the stamina of players and parents alike. Thank you to all the parents for giving up bank holidays and supporting their children so well. A big thank you also to Robin Jeffcott doing sterling work in managing the team throughout the day and to Pete Daire for helping with scoring.

Further to the Kevin’s match report above, some nice observations from Jonathan George the Pyrford manager below were sent in along with an internet link.

Kevin adds : “The catch from their player Charlotte was fantastic. I gave her the match ball at the end as a well done, not least as she was upset when Theo bowled her for a golden duck! (The ups and downs of cricket.)”

Here is Jonathan George’s e-mail:

“Hi Kevin!

A great game tonight played in great spirit. Your guys know how to build a score and then defend it.

Around half-way we were in with a shout, but a couple of run outs, (excellent fielding from Marcus N), took it away and we never really recovered.

There are some good graphs here:

We are beaten by a better side, but a great game all round.

Thanks for hosting us and at least we have both kept the League happy by playing the fixture in good time!”

Well done everyone!
