Congrats to James Miller on his 6-for making the top 3 on this week’s Play Cricket Surrey Honours Board:
James is the 199th different Stoke bowler to have taken five wickets or more in an innings, and the 21st to have done so on debut…yes 21 people have achieved that feat, the record debut analyses courtesy of H.Cleaver who returned figures of 7.1-3-9-8 in his only appearance for the Club in 1920. James checks in in 3rd place on the list below.
Seven players have registered a five wicket haul in their only appearance, two of them in the same game in 1941 when Messers Cowper and Kelly shared all ten wickets, taking 5-41 and 5-48 respectively.
Suzie Wood represents the women & girls, (Nat Sciver’s best was 4-21), taking 10th spot.

Bob Willis made his Stoke debut in 1962, but didn’t get a bowl until 1964! He took his first 5-for for the Club in August 1965 in a win against Oxshott, (http://sdacc.play-cricket.com/website/results/284346), one of seven 5-fors he took for us, (five of them were in the 1968 season when he took 49 wickets at 6.47.)
In 1919 Mr.L.Strange bowled for the first time in his seventh match for the Club and took 6 for 7 in 3.3 overs, (http://sdacc.play-cricket.com/website/results/302887) – there are one or two other examples of a 5-for in first spell but not debut. The above list is for debutants only.
