Travelbag Surrey Championship – Division 5
Stoke D’Abernon 106 all out (27.2 overs)
Churt 107 for 9 (27 overs)
Churt won by one wicket
Stoke’s 1st XI were left to rue a shortage of runs and pushing Churt all the way seemed little consolation as they fell to an opening day defeat.
Stoke were given first use of their own strip but lost early wickets. Despite Will Gudgeon, (29), and Nico Spreeth, (25), getting the board moving, only No.10 Alex Bond, (11 with 1×6 and 1×4), made it to double-figures. Mitchell, (5-15), and Plaistowe, (3-21), led the bowling effort.
Stoke pushed the visitors all the way, taking five wickets before tea; but they were unable to remove Mitchell who made 74 not out from 49 balls faced to guide his side to a one-wicket win; mention to No.11 Plaistow who blocked 22 deliveries at the other end when Stoke were still, favourites with Churt on 80 for 9.
Stoke debutant James Miller took 6 for 24; Ian Hopton 2 for 24, James Whitmarsh took four catches behind the stumps and there was also a run-out; but Stoke’s indifferent opening day record continues, and things need to be put right at Kempton next week.
