A Stoke career best 82 not out against the Chelsea Nomads – and scores of 44 against Wisley and 40 against Oxshott amongst others – helped Rod Thomson finish as the leading run-scorer for the Sunday XI in 2015 and become a new name on our leading players board:
When it came to availability, Rod was our Mr.Reliable; also helping find players to complete sides when necessary, (including filling in himself for both the 1st XI and 2nd XI League sides when we were short), and was often the first at the ground and last to leave on a match-day when it came to helping with the necessary tasks. Umpiring and scoring was never a chore, and he and also kept wicket when no-one else came forward.
In addition to his batting and keeping efforts he picked up some useful wickets, although sons Will and Alex still hold some bragging rights on the Stoke career bowling stats:
Will T 44 career wickets
Rod T 38
Alex T 14
Alex in particular picks his wickets up at a phenomenal strike rate. 267 players have taken 14 or more wickets for Stoke in our history, and only 27 of them have a better strike rate than his 19.71. Ed Ashwell, (19.10), is the only bowler still on the roster who gets his wickets at a faster rate.
(Bob Willis took his 62 Stoke wickets at a strike rate of 16.18…and at an average of 6.85!)
Let’s not also forget Rod also managed the Under 15s this season, and penned a match report for each game for this site. Click here for a review : http://www.stokecc.co.uk/tag/under-15s/
Deserved silverware for this incredible overall contribution was a no-brainer. At the awards night a belated presentation of the 2014 Vice Presidents’ Shield was followed up by the Club’s Spirit of Cricket award for 2015.
Please buy this man a beer whenever you see him at the bar!
