Runs for Dan D as Surrey 2nd XI beat Glamorgan by an Innings

Surrey 2nd XI completed an innings victory over Glamorgan 2s today. Yesterday Dan D hit a quickfire 77 not out from 59 balls, (10×4, 2×6), to help build an impressive first innings total. Glamorgan were unable to save the follow-on, and were then bowled out a second time to complete an innings victory.

Dan bowled in both innings and sadly was wicket-less…and he also has one or two front foot problems to sort out ahead of his next match.

Day 2 commentary on the Surrey web-site was as follows:

The day started with Surrey 441-4 and they opted to bat on throughout the second morning, trying to bat their hosts out of the game.

Sunbury CC’s Chris Green and Academy all-rounder Dan Douthwaite were the not out men overnight and the pair continued their form immediately, batting aggressively to move the score along quickly.

Green, (81), was eventually caught and bowled by Ruaidhri Smith but Douthwaite, (77* from 59 balls), was batting very well and, joined by fellow Academy member Ollie Pope, (33* off 25 balls), added an unbeaten 102 for the sixth wicket partnership before Surrey eventually called it a day on a massive 575-5.

The Glamorgan reply got off to a terrible start when James Kettleborough was dismissed off the first ball of the innings by Stuart Meaker but a partnership developed between Gareth Ansell, (25), and David Lloyd, (44.)

The pair added 61 before the returning David Balcombe bowled Ansell and followed it up with the wicket of Aneurin Donald, trapped lbw in the same over.

Alex Milton, (7), was also lbw to Balcombe and when Lloyd was caught behind by Pope off Sam Curran, Glamorgan were 96-5 and on the slide.

A young Surrey attack showed admirable killer instinct and three wickets from Freddie van den Bergh, who finished with 3 for 24, and one from Cambridge University spinner Josh Arksey – alongside a run out – saw Glamorgan fall to a final total of 159 all out.

Surrey opted to enforce the follow on and, although he did better than the first innings, Kettleborough, (15), lost his wicket for the second time in the day, this time lbw to Sam Curran.

When Ansell, (38), was bowled by Balcombe, Lloyd, (78*), and Donald, (38*), showed more application the second time around to put on an unbroken stand of 93 for the second wicket as Glamorgan made it to the close on 188-2.

The Welshmen still trail Surrey by 228 runs though and will need to bat well and long on the final day to stand any chance of saving the match.
