2nd XI defeated by Old Ruts

Saturday 2nd May 2015
Old Rutlishians 2nd XI 232 for 8 (45 overs)
Stoke D’Abernon 2nd XI 166 all out (45 overs)
Old Rutlishians 2nd XI won by 66 runs

Stoke’s 2nd XI, patched up in places due to the demands of the 1st XI and the odd pre-League holiday, put in a credible performance in Merton.

In his first outing of the season Richie Parrett, (3 for 31), made early inroads. He was well-supported by Mike Carty who bowled better than his figures suggested, and Jeremy Connell who took 3 for 44. At one point the hosts were 59 for 4; but middle and lower order contributions from Flanagan, (58), Adhier, (27), Lever, (50), and skipper Day, (30 not out), boosted the total to 232 for 8 at the end of the 45 overs.

There was a wicket each for Rod Thomson and Jase Earl; skipper Earl giving nine of the players an opportunity with the ball.

After tea Alistair McMillan made steady progress and at 64 for 2 a platform was set. However few, Earl and Moumer Khara aside who made 23 and 12 respectively, stayed with him; and when he was sixth out for 35, Stoke had only 86 on the board.

Old Ruts used eight bowlers, and seven of them took wickets. Pryce, Sellick and Lever took two each, but the asking rate climbed mainly due to a tight spell by Khan who returned figures of 7-5-6-1.

The Stoke tail wagged to give the total respectability; Sandy Henderson, (25 not out) and Connell, (18), made good contributions. Parrett hit his seventh career four but was last out off the last ball of the 45-over innings. Stoke were 66 runs short, but this proved a good work-out ahead of the League campaign that starts next week.
