Double win for the 3rd XI

Saturday 26th July 2014
3rd XI Friendly – Match 1
Graveney CC 42 all out (25.5 overs)
Stoke D’Abernon 3rd XI 43 for 3 (6.2 overs)
Stoke D’Abernon 3rd XI won by 7 wickets

Stoke were able to raise a third side at the weekend and welcomed Graveney CC to their second ground in Effingham.

Graveney were sadly a little weak and ran into a rampant young side who rolled them for 42 in 25.5 overs. Ollie Trower, currently in a waiting period to resume League cricket, bagged 3 for 1, Jack Townsend took 3 for 6, Harry Ross 2 for 9, and there was a wicket-a-piece for Giacomo Gray, and Paddy Wilson, the latter returning figures of 4-4-0-1.

Stoke needed just 6.3 overs to knock the runs off, but did lose three wickets along the way; Ollie John, (2), fell in the first over, Stephen Anderson clubbed two boundaries before being caught; and Trower, (13), was caught with the scores level. The winning run was a wide, leaving Alastair Curran 14 not out.

The sides agreed to play an 18-over match after tea.

3rd XI Friendly – Match 2
Stoke D’Abernon 3rd XI 183 for 4 (18 overs)
Graveney CC 106 for 8 (18 overs)
Stoke D’Abernon 3rd XI won by 77 runs

Stoke batted first this time and piled on the runs.

Curran picked up where he left off and hit a nice 30, a score trumped by Harry Ross who hit 44 before retiring.

Johnny Lawes announced his return to senior cricket with a six, and checked out on 15. Townsend hit 16, setting things up nicely for Hugo Solway to crack his maiden half-century for the club, walking off 50 not out at the end of the innings with Giacomo Gray who made an unbeaten 17.

In reply, captain Alistair McMillan gave opportunities to everyone with the ball. Curran took 3 for 21 from three overs, Trower, (2 for 9), laid claim to a technical 5-for, (although two of them were the same player), and there was a wicket each for Lawes and Anderson. McMillan also effected the 15th run-out of his illustrious Stoke career, he is also Stoke’s all-time leading run scorer and has taken more catches in the field than anyone else.

The visitors finished on 106 for 8, in the main due to Goodburn who hit an unbeaten 47.

Another good day for Stoke who continue to show their strength in depth and commitment to giving younger players a chance.
