There was no toss for this match as Stoke needed to bat first due to being down one player initially.

Stoke scored 286 for 3 and Esher 264 for 4, (2 for Martin, 2 for Edward), resulting in a win by 22 runs.

Stoke top scorers were Jack on 11, (including two fours), Martin on 7. Tom and Edward also hit a four.

Two matches played, as Johnny Lawes writes:

Friday 16th May 2014
West Surrey Youth League Cup
Stoke D’Abernon U12 121 for 6 (20 overs)
Malden Wanderers U12 95 for 6
Stoke D’Abernon U12 won by 26 runs

After a slow start being 11 for 3 we recovered well with debutant, James scoring 35 and retiring at a good rate. Further contributions from Theo with 13 and 35, (retired), from Tom L allowed us to reach our highest 20-over score yet of 121. The boys were asked to score at 6 an over and delivered which was a huge improvement from last season and bodes well for the rest of the season.

We used 8 bowlers in response and all bowled with control and accuracy. With good fielding and backing up their two best batsmen were restricted to a slow scoring rate with few opportunities to keep up with the asking rate of 6 an over. Tom L finished with 3 wickets and there were deserved wickets each for Max and Ben. An easy run out on the last over of the match finished the game.

A very satisfying win for the first match of the season.

Sunday 18th May 2014
Stoke D’Abernon U12 117 for 6 (20 overs)
Spencer U12 119 for 5 (18.2 overs)
Spencer U12 won by 5 wickets

Spencer won the toss and elected to field. We got off to a slow start facing tight bowling and field placing curtailing singles. The run rate pressure forced our first dismissal for a run out from a good throw in. The bowling rotation gave us more leeway and Tom and Rory upped the run rate nicely through the middle of the innings, with Tom eventually sacrificing his wicket on 29 as he continued to accelerate. Rory went on to score a good 33 going out as he went for a boundary shot ahead of his enforced retirement.

Harry anchored the remaining innings with 23 before being run out in the final over chasing runs. Theo also hitting a few valuable boundaries. We ended with 117 from our 20 overs to give us a good chance of winning.

Sadly our bowling let us down. Although we had few wides we enabled them to keep the scoreboard ticking along and their top order were good batters. We did have pockets of good fielding, but also a few runs were given away. The pick of our bowlers were Tom, Max, Utkarsh and Theo. Good captaincy from Tom optimised our field placing through the innings.

The result was disappointing as if we could have avoided a few boundaries when we were bowling to swing the match in our favour. Be that as it may it was an enjoyable match played in a good spirit by both sides.

Rod Thomson writes:

The Stoke D’Abernon U15 team was scheduled to host the team from Horsley & Send on the morning of Sunday 18th May, but the H&S manager David Allan called me yesterday evening to confirm that he had been unable to find more than 7 players and therefore was forced to concede the game to Stoke.

Stoke host Newdigate in the next round.
