Two brothers from Fetcham are looking to make waves in the digital world after developing an iPhone app to help cricketers of all standards keep track of their statistics.

Harry Cott and his younger brother Sonny, both sons of Gerry Cott – a founding member of 1980s band The Boomtown Rats – have developed My Cricket Average, an app that allows batsmen and bowlers to record, analyse and predict their statistics on their mobile.

Branded as the cricket statistics “Swiss Army knife” the brainchild of the two brothers, aged 24 and 16 respectively, allows cricketers to take control of their own personal targets, with graphs to show the results and required performances.

And the duo say it would not have been possible without the help of Stoke D’Abernon Cricket Club, where Sonny first started playing.

It has already proved beneficial to Sonny, who plays for Purley Cricket Club and Ireland, while also being a part of Surrey’s Emerging Player Programme.

Last season, the brothers developed a spreadsheet to help Sonny keep track of his performances and the pair have since turned it into an app.

Harry said: “I have never been involved in creating an app before and it has been a baptism of fire for the whole process. But there is scope to add things to it and develop it and if people like it there are more features we could add, like weather conditions and other things.”

It has already helped Sonny, who so far this season has scored 780 runs for Reed’s School first XI, including four centuries, (top score of 158 not out against the Old Reedonians), and two half centuries.

He has a current school batting average of 78 and with four school games to go he is looking to beat the Reed’s School’s record for runs in a season.

Sonny said: “As a batsman, it enables me to look back on good performances but also on the ways I have been getting out.

“Inputting my results after each match I play means I can instantly see if I am on course to achieve my goals for the season.

“The predictive functionality of the app gives me a required score ‘if out’ and a required score ‘if not out’ in my next game, which if I achieve, will keep me on track to reach my desired average for the season.

“These required scores give me a clear target to aim for when I’m in the middle.”

Meanwhile, Harry says he is hoping Sonny’s experience on the field can be replicated by other cricketers.

Harry said: “Cricket pros have performance analysis teams to tell them what they should be aiming for in each innings.

My Cricket Average does all the maths and the analysis, enabling cricketers to focus on every ball in their current game.

“With My Cricket Average, your cricket stats take care of themselves.”

The app is available for free from the Apple App Store.
