Development XI lose to Ashtead

Development Friendly Fixture
Stoke D’Abernon Development XI 184 for 8 (40 overs)
Ashtead Development XI 185 for 5 (37.1 overs)
Ashtead Development XI won by 5 wickets

With the 1st XI’s curtain raiser at home to Valley End falling foul of the weather, the Development XI took centre stage and lost out in a well-spirited contest at the Rec, the match played on the artificial pitch.

Stoke captain James Trower elected to bat on winning the toss, and younger brother Olly clipped the first two balls of the season through square for 2 to get the scorers warm.

The weather fluctuated between the sunny and the arctic, and as the bowlers found their lines, the runs dried up; Dom Morley, the Trower brothers and Alex Jefferies were lost with just 49 on the board. Repair work was needed.

Stoke’s Under 17 manager Adam Cooke joined the impressive Billy Zander and the pair added 73 for the fifth wicket. Cooke hit six fours in his knock of 43. Zander faced quicker bowlers several years above his own age group, but dealt with every challenge to compile a classy 38 on debut.

When Zander was lost to a delayed leg-before decision, (the finger raised as he turned for a second leg bye), Stoke were in danger of failing to bat their overs; but Dan Gluckman struck the ball cleanly in a brisk knock of 33. He was out shortly before the close, his cameo containing the only two sixes of the innings.

A decent helping of 28 extras boosted the total to 184 at the end of the 40th over.

After a tea Ashtead’s openers made a brisk start, but were separated after a short rain break disrupted their rhythm.

Stoke battled hard in the field and chipped away at the top order; two wickets each for Dom Lloyd and Zander and a single strike from Cooke; but they were unable to dislodge Pittam who walked off unbeaten on 90 as victory the victory target was reached in the 38th over of the chase.
