Under 9s Latest

Update on the Under 9s from Johnny Lawes and his team…

Fri 1st July – League v Leatherhead (Home). Lost by 17 runs

Stoke lost the toss and fielded first against a strong Leatherhead side. They scored 288 for the loss of only 5 wickets, 2 to  Patrick and 1 to Max, Harry S and Tom. 18 wides, (36 extra runs), did not help our cause and a shame on what was otherwise a good all round performance.

Stoke in reply scored 271 for the loss of 8 wickets. Tom top scored with 10 followed closely by Patrick with 7 on debut and 3 to William. The match should have been closer but some good tight bowling meant the loss of wickets always meant we were behind the asking rate.

Man of the Match – Patrick with his 2 wickets and 7 runs.

Sun 3rd July – League v Thames Ditton (Away) Won by 47 runs

Match report from Duncan Stewart…

Stoke lost the loss, and were put into bat on a pitch that had been cut out for the first time, resulting in some very odd bounces!  We got off to a very good start losing no wickets in the first 10 overs, and only losing 4 in total. Zach top scored with 25, supported by Angus, (23), Joe, (19) and Ben, (16.) A score of 302 looked enough, and it proved to be with our bowling much too strong. Some tight bowling from Jack, Taylor, Ben, Angus and Rory restricted them to 255, and we took 7 wickets.

The extras again were down to 26, with some strong fielding and two great catches, one each from Zach and Rory.

MOTM : Ben T for a great all round performance with bat and ball.

Sun 3rd July – U9 Friendly v Horsley & Send (Away).

Match report from Doug Gilbertson…

Stoke won toss & fielded first. Josh got a caught & bowled with the 1st ball of the match, so we started positively with 2 wickets in the 1st over. Henry very steady & straight. William N bowled a double wicket maiden in his 2nd over, the 1st wicket from the best catch I have ever seen at this level by Finlay at mid on. Hit hard & high, he didn’t flinch & took it above his head. Our fielding was absolutely brilliant through out including a direct hit run out from Lucas. We ended up taking 8 wickets in total 4 for Josh, 2 for William, 1 for Jamie & a run out. We thus restricted them to 278, (48 extras wides & no balls.)

Perfect steady start in reply. Finlay & Lucas putting on 22 for the 1st wicket without being out, (scoring 4 & 1 respectively.) William & George struggled to good bowling losing 3 wickets. Alfie & Jamie were superb, putting on 34, (13 & 14 respectively), Jamie particularly putting bat to ball. This left Josh & Harry only needing 5. They amassed 28, Joshi smashing 5 fours, 1 off the last ball.

A really good performance all round. Jamie & Josh both batted & bowled well. Alfie great debut.

No run outs batting for the 1st time & 3 catches & a run out in the field.

Josh gets man of the match for the 2nd week running with another very good all round performance.

Thank you to all the parents there today, it’s a real help to the team, and thank you to Simon, Alfie’s dad, for an excellent scoring performance on debut.

Well done everyone and a good day had by all.

Mon 4th July – GC v Frimley (Away)

Match report from Jason Howard.

Match Result : Frimley (296) beat Stoke D’abernon (237) by 59 runs – Stoke lost against a very good Frimley team.

Henry M won the toss and elected to field. The boys tried very hard with their bowling and fielding with some notable performances including two wickets for Patrick, a catch by William L and a run out for Henry M. In total we took 6 wickets which was a very good effort. There were a few wides and no balls but these will be reduced as the boys get a bit more experienced.

We were always behind what was a very good total by Frimley, who were very strong in the bowling department. William H top scored with 7 and there were some good shots from Jamie, Connor and William L. We lost 9 wickets, most of which were down to good bowling. The boys need to keep working of their calling and running between the wickets.

There were so many boys who could have been got man of the match but William L gets the vote for his overall batting/bowling and fielding performance.
