2nd XI defeated at Oxted

Surrey Championship Division 5

Stoke D’Abernon 2nd XI 156 all out (47 overs)

Oxted & Limpsfield 2nd XI 157 for 3 (38.5 overs)

Oxted & Limpsfield 2nd XI, (13 points), beat Stoke D’Abernon 2nd XI, (0 points), by 7 wickets

On a sunny, hot day Stoke travelled to second place team in the league which was Oxted and Limpsfield.

We lost the toss and Oxted decided to put Stoke in on a lively wicket with uneven bounce.

Immediately after the first ball of the match Steve Wade broke his bat and had to use the captain’s one instead. Could he get a fifty with the bat?? After playing themselves in, there was a loud appeal when the Oxted fielders thought Steve edged one behind but the umpire said “not out”. In the fourth over Ali tried to place the ball onto the leg side and was LBW for 4 with the score on 7. Malcolm looked in good form until he got a leading edge and was caught at slip by Trim of the bowling of for 9. The score was 27/2.

After a cautious start another wicket fell when Tufts missed a ball that came in towards him and bowled him for 6. Then it was 4 down in the next over when Steve was caught behind of the bowling of Goodwin for 11 and the score was 36/4.

Stoke managed to get up to 58/4 at drinks. After drinks Stoke had to try and bat through all the overs but instead they lost two more key wickets. First to go was Whitmarsh who was run out looking for a quick single and shortly afterwards Page was adjudged LBW for 12. The score at this point 68/6.

Johnny Lawes after a fifty in the last game tried to get Stoke out of a crisis and was caught at deep square Leg for 6. Then Phipps was caught by driving the ball on the up for 1. The score was 69/8. Matt batted with Lavender and put on 79, which is our highest ninth wicket stand in the league before Jake was bowled for 25 and the score on 148/9. The last batsman tried to stay there as long as possible but soon after the captain reached 50 he was bowled for 59 looking to keep the strike. The pick of the bowlers was with 4 wks.

In reply Stoke were looking for inroads straight away, but after the first over went for 10 we were on the back foot. At the other end Big Bird found some swing and had two close LBW appeals. After ten overs they were 52/0. Then Johnny came on to bowl and trapped Ejje LBW and Matt had Trayner caught by Tufts. Both batsmen were out for 34 and the score 78/2. After Adamson fell cheaply for 3 another LBW decision Stoke thought they could get into the tail but Kourea batted with the run rate in mind and he and Davis saw Oxted home with only the loss of 3 wickets.

Pick of the bowlers for Stoke were Johnny 2-61 off 15 overs and Matt 1-26 off 10.

Next week Stoke travel to Mitcham and hopefully we can get back to finding a winning formula.
